Let me start at the beginning. The house that backs up to ours has a young female mastiff. They leave her in the backyard all day and night with nothing but a bucket of water, through the scorching summer days and rainy nights. She never gets to come inside the house and they never interact with her at all. It absolutely breaks my heart!
A few weeks ago I took to giving the girl treats from under the fence, much to her delight. I even gave her an indestructible toy that Lily hasn't touched in years... She acted as if it were Christmas morning! Treats turned into behind-the-ear-rubs when the hole got big enough for her to stick her head underneath. She'd always give me big, slobbery kisses on my hands to thank me for the attention and kindness.
My roommate took some pictures of these events a few days ago...
Do those eyes not break your heart!?
Well, I'm not saying that we had nothing to do with it, but the hole became a little bigger the other night and yesterday I came downstairs to this adorable mastiff mug looking at me through our back door! I let Lily out, they played for a while, I gave her some pets, and then she went home under the fence when all was said and done!
Now I know that we should consult with her owners as to whether or not her little visits are okay, but honestly if they said "no" and closed up the hole I would be heartbroken. Tis better to ask for forgiveness than permission sometimes, no?
